Keratin Treatments
at The Lounge
Before you get a keratin treatment in Vancouver… what is keratin?
Keratin treatments are all about taming your wild hair, but how do they do that? Keratin is a naturally occurring protein – and the main structural component of your hair. So when you get a keratin treatment in Vancouver, you aren’t putting a product on top of your hair, you’re bonding additional keratin to the amount already in your hair. That makes a keratin treatment perfect if you’re looking for a more natural styling option.
Once the new keratin is bonded to your hair, your strands have the full structural support they need. That means your hair doesn’t just look healthier – it actually is. No wonder keratin treatments are the perfect way to make your hair shiny, sleek and strong!

Does keratin permanently straighten hair?
Keratin treatments are not a permanent treatment and do not affect your hair`s disulphide bonds like chemical straightening. It instead coats your hair and fills up the porosity (gaps) with keratin.

How long does it take to do keratin treatment?
A stylist applies a keratin hair-straightening product to your hair and then uses the heat of a flat iron to seal it in. The process takes about 90 minutes or longer, depending on your hair`s length.

Does hair go back to normal after keratin treatment?
Once the treatment fades out, the hair will return to its original texture. Typical results last around three months, then gently fades out as hair goes back to its natural structure.

Everything you need to know about the keratin treatment process in Vancouver
The keratin treatment process seals your hair cuticles, repairing damage and protecting them from future issues.
At the Lounge, the process starts with a wash. Then we apply the treamtent, allowing it to be absorbed by the hair. After that, it’s blow dry time! For the final step, we use a flat iron to lock in the keratin. The whole process takes about two and a half hours.
Then you’re ready to step out of the salon with your frizz and unwanted texture eliminated. Don’t worry, though, the treatments won’t strip away your hair’s body and bounce!
The last step in your keratin treatment? Enjoying your new, hassle-free hair!
Got colour?
The keratin treatment will fade your salon hair colour, so if you colour your hair, we recommend booking your colouring appointment for after the keratin treatment – except if your hair is highlighted! In that case, the lightener could life out the keratin treatment, so lighten your hair before the treatment.
Oil Buildup
You may also be currently using oil treatments in your hair and although all the rage currently, it can seal the hair and not allow nutrients into the hair and begin to coat it over time. We also need to remove the oil for best results of the keratin.
Similarly some drug store products that have waxes can have the same affect.
If you have been using coconut, jojoba, avocado or olive oil, or are concerned of wax buildup, we recommend to avoid using them for 2 weeks to a month before your treatment as the treatment will not work and we will not guarantee our work.
What is the difference between a brazilian Blowout and a keratin treatment?
There is no difference. The original keratin treatment product was Brazilian Blowout and was banned in Canada due to the release of formaldehyde when applied. The subsequent formulations do perform differently however due to the lack of formaldehyde.
Will a Keratin Treatment straighten my hair?
One of the biggest misconceptions of a Keratin Treatment is that they straighten hair. In fact the treatment infuses the hair with Keratin and smooths the cuticle. They can straighten the hair temporarily but this is more a side effect.
Why does trust matter when it comes to keratin treatments?
When you’re doing a keratin treatment in Vancouver, it’s important to make sure you trust your hairstylist. Keratin treatments are customized to your individual needs. Because of that, you want to make sure you are working with a stylist who listens to what you want and knows how to handle your hair. Done correctly, the treatment will last for 8 to 12 weeks, depending how often you wash and style it. Keep in mind, too, that re-growth will come in with your hair’s natural texture.
What if you want to have completely straight hair? That’s where Japanese Straightening comes in! This incredible process functions like a reverse perm, making your hair slick and straight.
Maintaining your keratin treatment
Keratin treatments take three days to fully set. As a result, right after you get your keratin treatment in Vancouver done, you need to care for it. For those first three days, avoid washing your hair so you won’t strip the keratin away.
After three days, you can basically go back to your normal routine. Just avoid shampooing your hair with products that contain sulfates or sodium.
Why does this matter?
Sulfates can strip hair, which means it can lift your keratin treatment. As for sodium, it can actually dissolve keratin. Clarifying shampoos can also remove keratin.
So, for at least 3 weeks after your treatment, please steer clear of clarifying shampoos. Once you reach that point, you can use them again, but try to limit yourself to using clarifying shampoo a week at most.
Not sure what products to use?
We would suggest using a shampoo and conditioner combination that works well on your natural hair, but is free from sulfates and sodium. All Electric London’s shampoos and conditioners and Calura Moisture Cleanser and Conditioner are excellent options and are available at the Lounge.
Choose your styling products and tools based on how you want to finish your look at home. For straight hair, try C-2 Smoothing Cream by Electric London paired with a titanium flat iron. Or Killer.Curls by Kevin Murphy paired with an ionic blowdryer with a diffuser for your curly hair. What’s great, though, is that no matter what style you create, your hair will always be sleek, smooth, and on point!
