Red Means Go! Best Red Hair Ideas

Fall is the perfect time to switch to a red hair colour! But we know that red hair can be intimidating. How do you know what shade is right for you?

How can you stop your red hair from fading?

How do you care for your red hair at home?

Before jumping into a New red hair colour, let’s talk about redhead history…

According to the history books, red hair emerged in the Dark Ages, due to a genetic mutation. At the time, redheads were seen with suspicion and were often deemed witches. Because of that, few people wanted to be redheads… but that all changed when Elizabeth I rose to power. Suddenly red hair was seen as striking and beautiful!

Over the years, red hair also came to be seen as sexy, with redheads being positioned as passionate, fiery and strong! Think Ginger Spice, Christina Hendricks, and – of course – Jessica Rabbit!

At the same time, red hair has been tied to lightness. Ever since Lucille Ball played her iconic I Love Lucy character, red hair has been popular in comedy. Today, everyone from Kathy Griffin to Emma Stone to Lindsay Lohan show off their red locks and comedy chops!

The basics about getting red hair in Vancouver

As we’ve shown, redheads have always been showstoppers! As soon as you enter the room as a redhead, all eyes are on you. So you want to make sure that people are noticing you for the right reasons. That’s why it’s important to get the right shade of red. Before choosing your hair colour, consult with your stylist about whether you should be opting for a copper gold, a violet, or any shade in between.

Your stylist will consider:

  • Your skin tone
  • Your eye colour
  • Your cut
  • Whether you want a more natural look or a more avante garde style

Once you have your unique shade of red picked out, it’s time to move on to style. When people think of redheads, they usually think of all-over colour. But you can have red highlights, balayage, or ombre.

On top of the considerations listed above, your stylist will now be looking at:

  • The impression you want to create
  • Your personality
  • Your work or school environment
  • How often you want to have to touch up your hair colour
  • If you would like to be on trend, indie, or timeless

Get creative about your style to make sure your red hair will be perfect for you!

The last thing to think about is whether you want to dip your toe into being a redhead with a semi-permanent dye or dive right in with a permanent option. If you’ve never gone red before, a test run can be a good idea. If you’re used to changing up your hair or are more spontaneous, though, you want just want to jump right in!

The upside is that there are great product lines in both camps, so you can get a chic look for the amount of time that works for you.

How to care for your New colour

Being a redhead takes some at-home care, but we promise the look is worth the work!

Red is a challenging colour as it can easily fade out. To make sure your hair colour looks fresh, you may want to reduce the number of times you wash your hair in a week. Instead of shampooing every time you hop in the shower, reduce the frequency that you wash your hair. In between washes, use a dry shampoo. One of the best options we’ve found is Kevin Murphy Fresh Hair. We love this dry shampoo because it is sulphate, paraben and cruelty free and it removes any excess oil and odours.

It’s equally important to avoid cheap shampoos. These can lift your colour, stripping it away. Instead, go for a toned shampoo that will accentuate your hair colour and keep you from getting brassy. We recommend Electric London Colour Protect shampoo and conditioner. There are also additional products to help reduce fadage, such as Electric London Prep Spray with UV protection and heat protecting ingredients.

Keeping your red hair shiny

To keep your red shining bright, you have to moisturize your hair. This is especially true if you have to strip your hair before dying it red. The best way to ensure your hair has the moisture it needs is a hair mask. Again, one of our favourites is Electric London’s Intensive Treatment Mask!

Finally, you’ll need to book regular touch-ups, especially if you have an all-over red hair colour. Not good at staying on top of your hair touch-ups? In that case, we suggest booking your next appointment before you leave the salon. This way, you’ll never forget about your hair, waiting ages between colour sessions.

Red hair may need a bit of care, but with the right attention, it’s going to make you the ultimate showstopper!
